Getting started as a freelancer is fairly straightforward if you have the time and attention. To get started, you need to find someone around you who needs the service you provide. My father has always done small engine repair in my small hometown and is often busier than he would like to be. There are always a host of lawnmowers, snowblowers, chipper/shredders and more that need to be repaired and people have learned over the years to seek him out.

Find one customer, even if you do the work for free, and then ask them to refer you to their friends and neighbors when they need small engine repair. Cultivate these first few clients into a network that is constantly working to refer people to you. If you do good work, at a good price, your customers will grow.

The best thing about this process is it typically doesn't require large outlays of cash at the beginning. You start out selling yourself and your skills by actually performing the work for people instead of advertising in newspapers and magazines.

Give it a try. I think you will enjoy the freelance life and it could turn into a very lucrative business for you.
